Graduate Certificate in Rural Studies

A graduate certificate in rural studies will equip you for a career with non-profits, cooperative extension services or similar programs that work to make a difference in the quality of life in rural and small-town communities. The certificate will prepare you for these opportunities by extending your skills and competencies to better understand rural people and rural places. The certificate may be used to augment your current program of study, provide an opportunity to explore a new area or provide an opportunity to refocus your career by specializing in a substantive area of rural studies such as community, environment or food.

Our students have gone on to careers in diverse settings, including

  • 4-H youth program specialist, Iowa Cooperative Extension Service
